Almost the baby's birthday *Insert terrified face here*
Humans can be notoriously difficult. As a species, it seems to be in our genetic makeup to complicate even the simplest of situations. A lot of the time we don't even realise we're doing it and a lot of the time we don't even have to do anything. Of course, I'm talking about that most perilous of first world problems: Presents.
What are you ever supposed to buy people? How can you do well for a birthday on a budget and still make it look special or important? If you're not on a budget, how much to spend? Why is it always the people you know the best that are the most difficult to buy for?
I have the most terrifying niece. She's gorgeous, don't get me wrong, just look at the picture, but I would rather get in the way of an evil warlord than Frankie on the rampage. My lovely littlie is turning a ripe old age of five in August. Of course, as far as she's concerned, her birthday should be a national holiday, and for all intent and purposes, that is exactly what she's going to turn it into.
As far as I know, my well-meaning but slightly under pressure sister is giving into the
When encountering people like this in life, regardless of who they are, it's always best to approach the "Birthday Situation" with caution and plenty of time to prepare. Lists certainly help so we'll go with a basic one here. I'll use Frank-Attack as an example.
What do they like generally?
- Pink
- Jewellery
- Pictures of herself
- Animals; mainly rabbits and dogs
- Horror Films
- Painting her nails
- Make-Up
- Cute clothes
- The letter "F" (F for Frankie)
Now I'm quite lucky that Frankie is quite a typical girlie girl, with the exception of finding unadulterated glee in gory horror films that she really shouldn't be watching (I told you. Terrifying child) However if the person that you're buying for isn't typical, stereo or otherwise, it's worth doing some research or wracking your brain for things that they really like or things that are relevant to them at that current time. For example, Frankie is in reception at school and is starting to learn how to read and write. Ever since she could recognise the letter "F", every single "F" in existence became 'her name'. Something like this might seem insignificant but you could very well incorporate it into your gift.
I would always say when it comes to people that you're close to, especially if you're on a budget, creative is absolutely the way forward. It could be something so simple yet it could really mean more to them than spending an absolute fortune on things that aren't personal in the slightest.
Pinterest and Youtube are an absolute lifesaver! We humans are a creative bunch and chances are if you want something a bit different or a bit out there but can't think of anything yourself, someone else will come up with something fabulous.
After panicking for the first week of July about what I was going to get this girl, I did a few days of research and decided that she's getting a box. But not just any box, the best Frankie box that Frankie could possibly get!
I'm currently in the process of filling a box with sweets in cupcake cases, pink jewellery, a pair of pink and white shorts, little make up sets, mini nail polish and probably one of those squeezy toys filled with fake blood. This box is going to be decorated with every "F" I can find, cut out from magazines and newspapers, topped with flowers, pom-poms and a photo of the birthday girl herself.
Not only are the contents of this box going to fill her with joy, if I know Frankie, she'll fall in love with the box and will want to use it forever.
See? All it takes is a little personalisation and thought and I can guarantee the your gift-ee will be happy. I'll update the blog with how well she likes her box but I just know she'll love it.
Birthday crisis? Averted!
